My flight arrived in Johannesburg early Saturday morning. Since colleagues Peggy and Jerry weren't getting in until the evening, I hired a driver for the day to show me around Jo-burg. Chris was great and I got to see many parts of the city. This is the old city hall downtown.
And the Nelson Mandela bridge. Those are old out-of-use train cars that the bridge is spanning.
We drove around Witwatersrand University--one of the old buildings.
There are still some beautiful old houses around the university.
We then drove into a small part of Soweto. Glad to have seen it. Will return in a few days.
Kind of ironic that after Soweto, we went out to Alberton--an Africans part of town. Chris took me to a great bakery for delicious meat pies.
I arrived at our AirB&B around 2:30 and was picked up by Hilary, my South African colleague. By the time we got to a few art galleries they were closing, but there was still interesting art on the street.
We went to a lovely garden center with lots of native South African plants.
We had great Greek food at a lovely restaurant.
Peggy and Jerry arrived after dinner to our absolutely amazing AirB&B.
A wonderful first day.
