This morning we flew from Cape Town to Hoedspruit airport in the bush and drove an hour and a half to our lodge.
Lots of animals on our way including this big guy.
We arrived at Thabamati which bills itself as a "luxury tented camp." No kidding!! Here's a bit of the main lodge, my tent, and my bedroom.
We were served a delicious high tea. The food is outstanding--best I've had on Safari. Only four tents in the whole camp. Very private.
Then off to our first game drive. Our ranger and tracker, Bret and Oscar, are both really nice and super competent. This was the best game drive I've ever been on.
First we went to a watering hole and saw this family of hippos.
Then we spotted some vultures and came across a pride of lions who had recently killed a wildebeest and were resting. Unfortunately, I didn't realize until I got back to camp that I had my camera on the wrong setting. Luckily I still got some good photos.
The lions decided they were hungry again and here they are feasting.
A group of hyenas were close to the lion kill waiting for them to finish.
Then we found a leopard. I can't believe our luck.
It was absolutely stunning. We followed this guy for quite a long while.
As if that wasn't enough, we came across a huge herd of African Buffalo. Magnificent.
Lovely sundowner--fabulous 1st day!!
