Day 3: The Origins Centre

It's Monday and nearly all the museums and galleries were closed.  We walked up a hill for a meal at a mall that has tons of outdoor cafes. Along the way, the modern architecture stood out. The first photo shows our AirB&B. We have the top two balconies.  Peggy did an incredible job of finding our lodging.

We then went to the Origins Centre at the WITS University.  This museum documents the use of tools and art in early humans back to 100,000 years ago.  It also documents the archeologists that did much of the initial work in finding remnants of humans in the Southern Cape area. This striking mural was on the outside of the museum.

When you first walk in the door there is a hanging map made from wire that shows Africa as the center of the planet. Really liked this!!

There were lots of amazing artifacts, but I absolutely loved the wall paintings. Here are a few.

Around the end of the 1800s there was a brother and sister team of archeologists who had the indigenous people they encountered tell them the stories of their people through drawings. They then made notes to keep records of the stories.

Surprisingly, there was also a contemporary art exhibit being set up.  The artist is Bev Butkow and the show is called "Re-weaving M/other" It would have been great to have the exhibit already installed to get more info on her work. It looked really fascinating.

We ended the day with a delicious dinner at our colleague Hilary's lovely house. Here is her beautiful back yard. We had great conversation and food. Fabulous.
